OSHA's Position On ADA Disability Act Training
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a Federal civil rights law prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in; employment, transportation, public accommodation, communications and government supported/related activities. It also established the disability requirements for telecommunications relay service. OSHA’s policy on ADA requirements is one of full support when it comes to employees and working environments. The policy basically stipulates that:
- If an employee can perform their job functions in a manner which does not pose a safety hazard to themselves or others, the fact they have a disability is irrelevant.
- Employers should strive for working conditions which will safeguard the safety and health of all workers, including those with special needs and limitations.
The need for all employees to be trained in these regulations stems from the fact that different aspects of industry are addressed. However, each employee, from HR personnel to management and regular employees will require training that is appropriate for that individual’s particular job level.
