The manufacturer deadline has already passed. The employer deadline is next.

OSHA’s revised Hazard Communication Standard aligns the rule with GHS Revision 7. Hazard classifications, label elements, and safety data sheet content have all been updated, which means documents and training built around the previous version may no longer reflect current requirements.

For employers with pure substances on site, three obligations are due by November 20, 2026. Finishing two of them does not partially satisfy the third.

Not every employer is working against the same date. Applying the wrong one means either scrambling unnecessarily or missing a requirement you actually have.

When is the employer HazCom deadline in 2026?

For employers with pure hazardous substances in their inventory, OSHA’s revised Hazard Communication Standard requires workplace labeling, written program updates, and employee training to be complete by November 20, 2026. The employer deadline for mixtures is May 19, 2028.

How do I know if the November 2026 date applies to my facility?

Look at your safety data sheets. If an SDS covers a single chemical compound identified by one CAS number, that’s a substance and the November 20, 2026 employer date applies. If it covers a formulated product that combines multiple chemicals, that’s a mixture: suppliers must comply by November 19, 2027, and employers by May 19, 2028. Most facilities handle both.

What are the three employer requirements before the HazCom deadline?

Employers must update alternative workplace container labels to the GHS-aligned format, revise the written HazCom program to reflect the revised standard, including current SDS content, and provide employee training on the updated GHS hazard classifications and communication requirements. Finishing two of the three does not satisfy the third.

Does purchasing updated training satisfy the training requirement?

No. Purchasing updated training and completing updated training are not the same thing. Training only counts if it’s assigned and taken. A course sitting unassigned in a library on November 20 does not satisfy the requirement, and it does nothing for the employee still working from outdated hazard information.
