MSHA Part 46 New Miner & Newly Hired Experienced Miner Interactive Online Training

To begin work at a surface mine, new miners (and newly hired experienced miners) need 24 hours of Part 46 New Miner Training. Four of those hours must be completed before you can begin work at all.

In this course, you’ll get a foundation of knowledge in the different kinds of hazards you will face in a surface mine, how to protect yourself from them, and how MSHA standards protect your right to a safe working environment. You’ll learn about safety controls for the transportation of people and materials on a mine site, safety practices for machinery and equipment maintenance, major electrical hazards, and the many explosive hazard considerations you need to understand as a miner. We’ll cover other surface mine safety and health standards, including materials storage and handling, airborne contaminants, noise exposure, chemicals in the workplace, and fire prevention and control. We’ll wrap up with an explanation of your rights as a miner and the mine owners’ responsibilities to your health and safety.

This New Miner & Newly-Hired Experienced Miner course is mandatory for on-site surface mine employees, but it must also be available to delivery workers, contractors, and other visitors of the mine site. As a new miner, you have a responsibility to ensure that MSHA standards are being observed at all times, and this course will introduce you to many of the standards and regulations you’ll need to follow.
