Why National Preparedness Month Matters: How to Get Ready for the Unexpected

When it comes to emergency preparedness, the numbers are a bit unsettling. According to FEMA, while many people take at least one action to prepare for emergencies, only 46 percent take three or more actions. With the increasing frequency of natural disasters like the hurricanes and wildfires we saw in 2017, FEMA’s Ready Campaign in 2018 honed in on the theme “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” The focus? Planning ahead.

Every September, FEMA marks National Preparedness Month, using this time to remind everyone that being ready is crucial, no matter the emergency. The Ready Campaign offers a variety of resources, from toolkits and videos to training sessions and webinars, all designed to help you take the necessary steps to prepare.

National Preparedness Month is a great opportunity to boost your readiness for emergencies and disasters. FEMA Administrator Brock Long highlights that it’s not just about having a communication plan; it’s also about being financially prepared for unexpected costs. This includes having proper insurance and knowing life-saving skills like CPR.

Here’s the breakdown for each week in September:

September 15 is the National Day of Action, encouraging everyone to take concrete steps toward better preparedness.

Kirstjen M. Nielsen, the former Secretary of Homeland Security, emphasized, “Thinking ahead can save lives. We’re aiming to build a ‘culture of preparedness’ nationwide. Make preparedness a priority in your daily life. Assess your readiness, and ensure you’re equipped to protect your family if disaster strikes.”
