There are many different types of cranes that assist employees in the construction industry and they all have the ability to make many jobs much easier by lifting enormous weight that otherwise couldn€™t be lifted. But, no matter what size or type the cane is, they all have a potential for disaster when they are not operated safely. Crane-related accidents are usually deadly, due to the heavy loads that are lifted. A small miscalculation, or a brief moment of inattention, and tragedy could strike the construction site, bring production to a complete halt. Once a load falls not much can be done to stop it or to move safely out of the way of it. A coworker could be injured or killed, and expensive equipment or materials could be damaged or destroyed. Atlantic Training offers MARCOM's training products on "Crane Training School". The training programs point out to employees that over 90% of crane-related accidents are caused by human error. The training also teaches employees how to prevent these incidents from occurring. Topics covered in these products include:
- Physical and mental preparation
- Equipment inspection
- Hazard assessment
- Boom, jib and overhead cranes
- General and operational safety devices
- Crane Operation Training
- Hand signals
- and more
OSHA's Position On Crane Safety Training
OSHA has created a number of mandatory regulations when it comes to the operation of cranes. It has been reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that over 50% of crane-related accidents resulted in fatalities in 2009. These injuries and fatalities occurred as a result of crane collapses, power line contacts, falling parts and other crane hazards. The financial toll, as a result of crane accidents, amounts to over $12 billion in the U.S. each year and the average cost of just one accident or near-miss amounts to approximately $27,000. In addition, punitive damages run into the millions of dollars, annually. It should also be noted that OSHA’s 2010 and 2011 budgets for additional compliance officers were increased. As a result, OSHA has dramatically increased its number of “significant cases” (over $100,000 in citations) with penalties frequently amounting to $1 million or more! The DVD training videos that we offer are designed to provide the necessary training in order to address these issues in the most effective manner possible. The topics that are covered by our training materials include:
- Equipment Inspection (OSHA 1926.550(a)(5))
- Identifying Potential Hazards
- Different Procedures Associated With Different Types of Cranes (OSHA 1910.179)
- Crane Signal Safety Devices (OSHA 1910.179(i))
- Correct Use of Hand Signals (OSHA 1926.1422)
- Proper Procedures When Operating Cranes
- Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (OSHA 1910 Subpart J)
- And other crane-related safety issues.
