Why is mental health such a serious issue in construction and the trades?

Several risk factors stack up in these industries at once: physically demanding work and chronic pain, unpredictable schedules and seasonal layoffs, long stretches away from family, and a strong cultural expectation to tough things out. CDC and NIOSH reporting has consistently placed construction among the occupational groups with the highest suicide rates, which is why workplace-level support matters here more than almost anywhere.

What are the warning signs a coworker may be struggling?

Look for changes rather than personality types: pulling away from the crew, irritability or a shorter fuse than usual, absences and lateness that start stacking up, uncharacteristic near misses or sloppy work, visible exhaustion, increased drinking, or comments about being a burden or not mattering. Any direct mention of not wanting to be here should always be treated as urgent.

How do I start a mental health conversation without making it awkward?

Keep it short, private, and specific. Name what you noticed, ask a direct question, and then stop talking and listen. Something like “You haven’t seemed like yourself the last couple weeks, everything alright?” works better than anything clinical. You don’t need to diagnose or fix it, you just need to open the door and know where to point them next.
