Course Overview

Our workplace is full of hazards, hazards that can hurt us or kill us. Controlling these hazards and preventing injuries is the point of our safety and health program. One such hazard is the unexpected starting of machines or other unplanned releases of hazardous energy. Controlling hazardous energy can prevent injuries and save lives. That is the point of our facility’s “Energy Control” or “Lockout/Tagout” program. And that is the point of this program.

Topics the energy control plan, situations requiring lockout/tagout, lockout/tagout devices, energy control procedures and returning equipment to service.

No Worries. Here's Some Helpful Info.

The primary purpose is to control hazardous energy and prevent serious injury or death caused by the unexpected starting of machines or the unplanned release of stored energy during servicing and maintenance.
An authorized employee is specifically trained and permitted to implement lockout/tagout procedures on machinery. An affected employee is someone who operates or works around the equipment being serviced and must be notified before and after a LOTO operation takes place.
No. LOTO devices must be explicitly approved by the company and standardized within the facility by color, shape, or size. They must also be sturdy enough to prevent accidental removal and can never be used for purposes other than energy control.
Verification ensures that all energy sources have been successfully isolated and any residual or stored energy (like gravity, pneumatic pressure, or capacitors) has been safely dissipated, preventing accidents caused by mistakenly isolating the wrong source.
A lock and tag may only be removed by the specific employee who applied it to guarantee they are safely clear of the danger zone. If an employee cannot be located, strict facility protocols for removing an abandoned lock must be overseen by a supervisor.
