Course Description

In any workplace where there is potential for exposure to bodily fluids, the dangers are often invisible. You cannot determine if a person carries a bloodborne pathogen simply by looking at them. In fact, many individuals who carry serious infectious diseases are completely asymptomatic and unaware of their own status. This reality makes the workplace significantly more hazardous than many employees realize, necessitating strict adherence to safety protocols. The statistics are startling and highlight the critical need for vigilance. According to 2019 estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 58 million people worldwide were suspected of having chronic Hepatitis C; however, a staggering 75% of those cases (43.5 million people) were undiagnosed. Similarly, HIV.gov estimated that of the 1.1 million people in the U.S. living with HIV, approximately 15% (165,000 people) were unaware they were infected. Because you cannot rely on symptoms or self-reporting to identify risks, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends "Universal Precautions"—the practice of treating all blood and Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM) as if they are known to be infected.

This comprehensive training course traces the evolution of safety standards to ensure your team is up to date. While Universal Precautions set the groundwork, OSHA expanded these guidelines in 1996 to create what we now call "Standard Precautions." This modern standard is far more robust, encompassing not just fluid avoidance, but also strict hand hygiene protocols, the mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like gloves and masks, and safe injection practices to prevent needlestick injuries.

By taking this course, employees and managers will move beyond basic awareness to practical application. We will cover the specific biological mechanisms of transmission and provide a step-by-step guide to maintaining a sterile and safe environment. You will learn how to bridge the gap between abstract safety rules and daily routine, ensuring that "Standard Precautions" are standard practice. Whether dealing with a minor first-aid incident or a major exposure event, this training provides the knowledge required to protect health, save lives, and maintain full compliance with federal safety regulations.
