Course Overview

Gravity doesn't care how experienced you are.

Falls from stairs and ladders are among the most common causes of workplace injuries, yet they are almost entirely preventable. This training short reinforces the non-negotiable habit of using handrails and keeping your line of sight clear, never carrying loads that block your view of your feet.

We drill down on the golden rule of climbing: Three Points of Contact. Two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, always. We also cover the critical inspection protocols. If a ladder has a crack or a loose rung, do you know the specific tagging procedure to ensure no one else uses it? Watch this video to learn how to climb safely and when to tag it out.

What is the most important rule for maintaining balance while climbing stairs?

You should always use handrails to help maintain your balance and ensure that they are firmly anchored.

How should you handle carrying objects while traveling on stairs or ramps?

Never carry so many items that your forward vision is blocked; you must always be able to see the floor in front of you.

What should you do if you discover a ladder is damaged?

You must remove it from service immediately, tag it with a “Do Not Use” sign, and notify your supervisor.

What is the "three points of contact" rule for ladder safety?

You must keep three points of contact with the ladder at all times; if this isn't possible, additional fall protection is required.

How do you signal your presence when using a ladder in a high-traffic area?

In areas with high foot traffic, you must use a cone to signal to others that you are working in that location.
