According to the Center for Disease Control, the oil and gas industry employs over 450,000 workers and is characterized by a particularly high occupational fatality rate. During 2003-2009, 716 oil and gas extraction workers were fatally injured on the job resulting in an annual occupational fatality rate of 27.7 deaths per 100,000 workers. Of the 716 fatalities, the majority were either highway motor vehicle crashes (29%), or workers being struck by tools or equipment (20%). The next most common fatal events were explosions (8%), workers caught or compressed in moving machinery or tools (7%), and falls to lower levels (6%). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly half of all fatalities occur to oil and gas extraction workers with less than one year of experience. This safety training video is designed to help educate short service employee's managers as to the safety requirements, training and documentation of Short Service Employee's or SSE's.
