Training Objectives

Identify multiple exit options and recognize the sensory indicators of an attack
Develop inclusive response plans that incorporate assistance for special needs

Course Overview

Panic is natural. Freezing is fatal.

In the chaos of an active shooter event, your brain’s default setting is often to pause. This training is designed to override that instinct. We focus on the four pillars of preparation that allow you to act when others hesitate.

Do you know what a gunshot actually sounds like inside an office building? (Hint: It’s not like the movies). We teach you to recognize the sensory realities of an attack, including smoke and screaming, and why knowing just one exit isn't enough. We also cover the critical, often-overlooked necessity of planning for coworkers with special needs. Watch this video to turn anxiety into a concrete plan of action.

No Worries. Here’s Some Helpful Info.

How can a person combat the tendency to freeze in an emergency?

A person can combat this by practicing immediate actions, increasing self-awareness, and broadening expectations of the situation they might face.

Why is it dangerous to mistake the sound of gunshots for something else?

Mistaking the sound may cause a person to go looking for the source of the noise, which would be a huge and dangerous mistake in an active shooter situation.

What is the recommended number of exits a person should be aware of at all times?

A person should know the location of at least two exits at all times, including the possibility of windows if they are safe for egress.

Besides preparing for the immediate threat, what type of individual assistance should be planned for?

Planning should include having a method to help individuals with special needs or challenges who require assistance during the emergency.

What environmental chaos should people expect to prepare for psychologically during an active shooter event?

People should expect that there may be a lot of smoke and screaming, and being prepared for this prevents surprise that could cost precious response time.
