Training Objectives

Lead safety with policy, goals, and reporting culture

Engage workers through surveys and open reporting channels

Manage hazards using JHAs and control methods

Track performance and improve safety across all sites

Course Overview

Becoming a Safety Champion is a marathon, not a sprint. The program is structured as a three-step journey—Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced—designed to move your organization away from a mountain of paperwork and toward a functional, proactive safety system.

The journey begins by focusing on the Seven Core Elements:

  1. Management Leadership: Starts at the top. You must draft a written policy, set clear goals, and ensure management signs off.
  2. Worker Participation: You are the eyes and ears of the facility. Use surveys to find "slick spots" and establish anonymous reporting channels.
  3. Hazard Identification and Assessment: You cannot fix what you do not see. Create JHAs for routine and non-routine tasks, and track each hazard from discovery to correction.
  4. Hazard Prevention and Control: Use to prioritize fixes, ensuring you document all control decisions.
  5. Education and Training: Build a calendar for every role, ensuring training is documented, accessible, and tailored to the workforce's language and literacy levels.
  6. Program Evaluation and Improvement: Use your OSHA 300 logs and simple spreadsheets to track injury rates (lagging) and completed inspections (leading).
  7. Communication on Multi-Employer Worksites: When contractors are present, verify their safety records and implement written rules for the site.

To begin, register at osha.gov/safety-champions, download the Step Guide and Safety Champions Tracker, and pick one "5-Minute Win" to execute this week.

This program is available with Spanish and French closed captions.

No Worries. Here's Some Helpful Info.

No. It is an independent, voluntary educational resource. Participation does not exempt an employer from OSHA inspections, nor does it confer official program completion or endorsement.
A "5-Minute Win" is a small, immediate action you can take to make progress toward a core element—such as drafting a short safety policy or adding a high-visibility vest requirement to a visitor policy.
While "lagging indicators" (like injury rates) tell you what has already happened, "leading indicators" (like the number of inspections completed on time) help you prevent accidents before they occur.
Workers often have the most direct knowledge of workplace hazards. Including their input in policies and risk assessments ensures the safety system reflects the reality of the work being performed.
It is a method for prioritizing safety fixes. It emphasizes eliminating or substituting hazards before relying on administrative controls or personal protective equipment (PPE).
