Course Overview

In every workplace, hazards exist—some are obvious, while others develop quietly through routine tasks or changing conditions. The question isn’t whether risks exist, but whether an organization has a systematic way to identify and control them. ISO 45001 is the world’s first international standard specifically designed to provide that system.

Unlike traditional safety programs that might react to accidents after they happen, ISO 45001 is built on a proactive framework. It uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model to ensure that safety is integrated into every level of the business. This training breaks down the standard into manageable pieces, starting with the Context of the Organization, where we look at internal and external factors that affect safety, and moving into Leadership and Worker Participation, the "engine room" of the entire system.

You will explore how the standard requires organizations to go beyond simple "compliance" by establishing clear OH&S Objectives and rigorous Operational Controls. We also cover the critical "Check" and "Act" phases: Performance Evaluation, where the system's effectiveness is measured through internal audits, and Improvement, where the organization learns from incidents and non-conformities to prevent future harm. Whether your organization is seeking formal certification or simply wants to strengthen its safety culture, this course provides the blueprint for building a workplace where every employee can perform their job safely.

No Worries. Here’s Some Helpful Info.

What makes ISO 45001 different from a standard safety manual?

While a manual lists rules, ISO 45001 provides a system. It integrates safety into the organization’s overall business processes, requiring leadership accountability, regular performance reviews, and a commitment to "continual improvement" rather than just static compliance.

Does an organization have to be large to implement ISO 45001?

No. The standard is designed to be flexible and scalable. It can be applied to any organization, regardless of its size or industry, from a small workshop to a global corporation.

What is "Worker Participation" in the context of the standard?

ISO 45001 emphasizes that workers must be involved in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the safety system. This includes consultation on hazard identification and providing workers with the time and resources to participate in safety committees without fear of reprisal.

What is the difference between a "Hazard" and a "Risk"?

A hazard is a source with a potential to cause injury or ill health (like a slippery floor). OH&S risk is the combination of the likelihood of that hazard causing harm and the severity of the injury that could result.

What happens during a Stage Two Certification Audit?

Stage Two is the "implementation" audit. An external auditor evaluates how the system operates in practice by reviewing records, observing operations, and interviewing employees to verify that the system is actually functioning as intended.
