This training covers U.S. air transport of dangerous goods, including classification, packaging, labeling, documentation, and shipment safety reviews.
Understand CBTA and role-specific training requirements
Classify hazardous materials and assign packing groups
Select approved packaging and apply hazard labels
Complete shipping documents and verify shipment compliance
Air transportation poses extreme hazards due to rapid shifts in atmospheric pressure, temperature fluctuations, and severe engine vibration—all in an environment where emergency response options are virtually non-existent once airborne. In the United States, PHMSA enforces the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), while international flights adhere to standards set by ICAO and published in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR).
Compliance begins with Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA), ensuring that employees preparing, accepting, or loading shipments receive role-specific training. Shippers bear full responsibility for categorizing products into one of 9 Hazard Classes and determining the appropriate Packing Group (I for high danger, II for medium, and III for low).
Once classified, materials must be placed in authorized packaging—frequently requiring UN specification testing—with adequate expansion room for liquids and secure closures. Packages require precise markings (UN number, proper shipping name) and hazard labels (e.g., Class 3 Flammable Liquid, Cargo Aircraft Only, Lithium Battery Mark). Shippers must complete an accurate Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods and perform a thorough pre-shipment review to account for State Variations (U.S. government rules) and Operator Variations (airline-specific restrictions) before offering cargo for air transit.
