Course Overview

Working in hazardous waste operations often means facing dangerous environmental conditions in addition to chemical hazards.

One of the most significant risks is heat stress, which results from a combination of physical exertion, environmental conditions, and the clothing or personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the job. Heat strain is the body's physical response to that heat load and can include heavy sweating, an increased heart rate, and a rising core body temperature.

Learners will explore the factors that contribute to heat stress, including workload, weather, acclimatization, and task duration.

Heat strain is the body's response to heat stress, such as increased sweating, elevated heart rate, and rising body temperature.

Protective clothing can trap heat and moisture, reducing the body's ability to cool itself through sweat evaporation.

Heavy physical work, hot and humid conditions, lack of acclimatization, and wearing impermeable PPE all increase heat stress.

Employers should perform hazard assessments, choose appropriate PPE, monitor workers, and adjust work duration and practices to manage heat exposure.
