Course Description

It is always better to prevent a fire than to have to fight one. Your safety and the safety of your colleagues depend on understanding and eliminating fire hazards before they can turn into a tragedy. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to inform employees about potential fire hazards in their work areas and the necessary steps to prevent fires from starting.

In this essential training, you will build a solid foundation in fire science, starting with understanding the three elements a fire needs to ignite and maintain combustion: fuel, heat, and oxygen—often called the "Fire Triangle". The basic strategy of fire prevention is to control or isolate these sources, particularly fuel and heat, to prevent combustion.

We will review specific, practical fire prevention measures and tips crucial for maintaining a safe workplace:

  • Prohibited Sources: Strictly adhere to “No Smoking” rules and Open Flame prohibitions.
  • Equipment Care: Use spark-producing tools and equipment with special care and maintain them properly to prevent overheating. Report any damaged equipment immediately.
  • Good Housekeeping: Ensure proper housekeeping to manage combustible materials. This means keeping them cleaned up and away from any heat- or spark-producing equipment or devices.
  • Flammable Storage: Learn to properly dispose of containers and contaminated waste. Store flammable liquids only in approved, properly-maintained, and used containers in designated areas. This also includes storing reactants (like oxygen and acetylene, for instance) at or outside of their appropriate separation distance in well-ventilated areas to minimize the risk of interaction.
  • Sprinkler Clearance: You must follow the 18-inch minimum clearance rule by not stacking materials too close to fire sprinkler heads, as obstructions can render the suppression system ineffective.

The unique characteristics of your specific work environment may require you to expand this list, emphasizing the need for diligent job safety analyses and ongoing hazard recognition. This course is designed to give you the practical knowledge and procedures needed to achieve 100% compliance and ensure the safest possible working environment for everyone.
