Earthquakes can strike with little or no warning, affecting both well-known seismic zones like California or Alaska and surprising low-frequency regions like Missouri or South Carolina. When an unexpected quake hits, the chaos is compounded if nobody is expecting it. This comprehensive training module provides the essential knowledge to keep you and your workplace ready for the unexpected, teaching life-saving steps for before, during, and after the ground begins to shake.

Contrary to Hollywood movies where the earth swallows cars, the primary danger to workers during a seismic event comes from gravity and their immediate environment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) notes that injuries typically result from falling structural components, shifting furnishings, inadequately secured stored materials, fires from gas leaks, and hazardous chemical releases. This is why proactive mitigation is vital. Employers are required by OSHA’s General Duty Clause to maintain a workplace free from recognized hazards, which includes foreseeable natural disasters.

This course emphasizes creating an environment that won't weaponize against you. We cover how to effectively spot hazards, ensure tall furniture and storage racks are anchored, secure overhead hazards, and properly manage hazardous materials to prevent toxic spills or fires. When the shaking actually starts, muscle memory must take over. You will learn the critical step-by-step procedure of Drop, Cover, and Hold On, while busting dangerous, outdated myths like running for a doorway or sprinting outside.

Furthermore, this training delves into your company's Emergency Action Plan (EAP), exploring crucial evacuation routes, designated assembly areas, and the absolute necessity of fully stocked disaster supply kits. A true disaster kit requires at least one gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food, flashlights, whistles, and dust masks. Finally, the aftermath of an earthquake often brings dangerous secondary hazards. We prepare you for sudden aftershocks, deadly gas leaks, ruptured water lines, and downed power lines.
