Course Overview

A trench can bury a worker in seconds, and once the walls start moving, it is too late to react. This course is designed to train the designated "Competent Person", the individual authorized by OSHA to identify hazards and stop work immediately when danger arises. We focus heavily on the science of stability, teaching you how to analyze the earth before you enter it. Participants will master the mandatory visual and manual tests (such as the thumb penetration and plasticity tests) required to classify soil as Type A, B, or C. By understanding the geology, you can select the correct protective systems, sloping, shoring, or shielding, to ensure that the trench remains an excavation, not a grave.
