Course Overview

This training will discuss the general knowledge of how to resolve workplace conflict. According to the OSHA Act of 1970, each employer shall furnish to his employees, employment and a place of employment that are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to their employees, and shall comply with occupational safety and health standards promulgated under this act.

Learning how to effectively resolve conflict can turn damaging situations into positive opportunities. The training will provide guidance on crucial conflict resolution skills that once applied can be effective in the workplace. Utilizing these skills involves understanding values and intense emotions.

We will take a look at approaches to conflict resolution, as well as the psychological benefits of implementing these skills. Specific approaches such as the open door policy, accommodating, compromising, avoidance, and collaboration are all effective approaches that prove valuable toward conflict resolution and communication.

Self-awareness is an integral part of resolving conflict. This training will make mention of how becoming intentional about increasing self-awareness can change unconscious emotions below the surface, which can be reflected in new ways of thinking, being, and acting.

Overall, understanding that looking first for needs, not solutions, is a powerful tool for generating successful and positive outcomes. Understanding conflict and how to resolve workplace disruptions is not to decide whether someone is right or wrong, but instead, the goal is to reach a solution that everyone can live with. This training is helpful as you navigate conflicts when they arise within your teams and workplace. Managing conflict increases team cohesion and strengthens relationships that promote teamwork.

No Worries. Here’s Some Helpful Info.

Are there specific conflict resolution strategies I can apply in the workplace to help me best manage my team when conflict arises?

Yes! Some of these include practicing self awareness, self control, assertive communication, collaboration, problem-solving, empathy, and active listening.

What are some of the psychological benefits of conflict resolution?

These include stress reduction, improved self-esteem, improved self-efficacy, better relationships, and increased energy.

What are some of the major approaches to conflict resolution in the workplace?

There are some approaches that once implemented can effectively resolve conflict when it arises. Examples include the open door policy, accommodation, compromise, avoidance (although this can also be a negative!), and collaboration.

Do workplaces really have fatal injuries resulting from conflict?

Yes, and unfortunately according to BLS.gov data, "Intentional Injury By Person" far outweighs "Injury by Person, Unintentional or Intent Unknown."

Is there anything in addition to conflict resolution methods and approaches I should consider?

Communication - it involves active listening skills. Listening is a valuable skill that can have a direct impact on how conflicts arise and how they can be avoided or resolved. Proper communication skills also include the use of neutral language, body language, and tone. This may look like you saying to someone, “I feel undervalued in my position,” as opposed to saying, “You don’t value me and my position.” Often, what is not being said propels conflict even further. Use positive body language that signifies your willingness to resolve conflict and reach an agreement
