The requirement for Cal/OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Training (Title 8, CCR, §5193 ) is not limited to a single industry but applies to all California employees who face "occupational exposure." This is defined as any reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral (e.g., needlestick) contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) as a result of performing their job duties.
While the most obvious roles are in healthcare, including Registered Nurses, Physicians, Dentists, Medical Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Laboratory Personnel, many other occupations also require this mandatory annual training. This includes First Responders (Police, Firefighters, EMTs), Designated First Aid Providers across all industries, Custodial and Janitorial Staff (especially those cleaning healthcare or educational facilities where they may handle contaminated waste or sharps), Athletics Trainers, and certain Waste Management Laborers. Plumbers working on systems directly connected to hospitals or healthcare facilities are also often covered, as are employees in educational and research settings who work with human tissues or cell lines. The employer is ultimately responsible for conducting an exposure determination to identify every task and job classification that requires this training.
