Training Objectives

Implement proper anchoring techniques for stationary power tools

Apply safe work practices for pneumatic and hydraulic tool use

Course Overview

Stability is the foundation of safety. A machine that "walks" or tips during operation is a disaster waiting to happen. In this final section, we cover the critical importance of anchoring stationary equipment to floors or benches. We move beyond the machine itself to look at the tools you use—pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric—and the specific precautions each requires.

From managing air hoses to prevent trip hazards to checking hydraulic lines for pinhole leaks, we cover the "other" precautions that complete a safe workspace. We also discuss administrative controls like "housekeeping" and exclusion zones. By mastering these final stability and handling techniques, you ensure that your tools work for you, rather than against you.

No Worries. Here's Some Helpful Info.

Machines designed for a fixed location must be securely anchored to prevent them from moving or "walking" during operation, which can lead to guard misalignment or tipping.
Beyond the tool itself, air hoses can create significant trip hazards, and a sudden hose failure can cause the line to whip violently if not properly secured or equipped with safety valves.
You should check for pinhole leaks or "weeping" in the lines, as hydraulic fluid under high pressure can penetrate the skin, causing severe internal injuries.
Keeping the area around a machine free of scrap material, oil spills, and cluttered tools prevents slips and falls into the moving parts of the machine.
An exclusion zone is a designated area around a machine where only the operator is permitted, preventing bystanders from being struck by ejected materials or moving machine components.
