What is an EAP pre-season audit?

An EAP pre-season audit is a self-assessment that reviews your organization’s emergency action plan before an emergency happens, checking whether evacuation routes, communication trees, training records, and drill history are current rather than just documented.

Why should we audit our emergency action plan before September?

September is National Preparedness Month, and auditing your plan a week early puts your organization in planning mode instead of reaction mode, ahead of the wave of preparedness content that typically arrives once the month begins.

What does OSHA require in an emergency action plan?

Under 29 CFR 1910.38, covered employers must have an emergency action plan. Employers with more than 10 employees are required to maintain it in writing; those with 10 or fewer may communicate it orally. The plan must cover evacuation procedures and route assignments, emergency reporting procedures, employee accounting after evacuation, and procedures for rescue or medical duties.

How often should an emergency action plan be reviewed or tested?

OSHA’s standard doesn’t set a fixed schedule, but best practice is to review the plan whenever staff, roles, or the facility layout change, and to run drills regularly enough that gaps surface during a test rather than during an actual emergency.
