Updated: Six People Dead in Orlando Workplace Shooting

Shots rang out at Fiamma, a company that makes awnings for recreational vehicles located in an industrial park in Orlando, at approximately 8 a.m. on June 5. According to Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demmings, six people, including the shooter, died.

“He shot five innocent people this morning then turned the gun on himself,” Demings said.

As many as a dozen law enforcement vehicles responded to reports of gunfire at the building and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged early one that there were “multiple fatalities.” The active shooter 9-1-1 call came in at 8:03 a.m. and officers were on scene by 8:05 a.m., said Demings.

The sheriff’s office tweeted early on: “OCSO working shooting scene that has stabilized. Multiple fatalities. Situation contained. Sheriff will brief as soon as info is accurate.”

According to Demings, the 45-year-old shooter had been fired from the company in April, and today’s events were not the first time police were called to the business for a violent workplace incident in which he was involved.

“In June of 2014, subject who was responsible for the deaths this morning was the subject of a workplace violence incident in which he allegedly battered another employee here at this business. There were not charges filed at that time,” said Demings during a press conference.

Demming added that the suspect had a “minor” criminal history that included a DUI arrest, a marijuana possession charge and battery charges.

Four victims – three men and a woman – and the shooter were dead on the scene. A sixth victim – a man – died at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Seven workers were not injured and were interviewed by police.
