Seven Workers Rescued After Louisiana Oil Platform Explosion

Seven workers were rescued and transported to hospitals after an explosion occurred about 7 p.m. Central time on a oil platform in Lake Pontchartrain, La., near the city of Kenner, La. One person remained unaccounted for and the platform was still burning early Oct. 16, TV 8 in New Orleans reported.

The platform is a transfer point for oil produced by other platforms, and the explosion apparently occurred while the transfer platform was undergoing a cleaning procedure, according to the TV station’s coverage.

The reports indicated the Coast Guard, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office personnel, and other responders were on scene, and the Coast Guard planned to conduct a helicopter search for the missing worker during the morning of Oct. 16.
