HazMat crews respond to ammonia leak at construction site

HMN- Birmingham, AL- Birmingham Fire and HazMat units initially responded to “gas odor” call, and arrive on scene to find an Anhydrous Ammonia leak.  ABC 33 provided more information. Birmingham Fire and Rescue and several Hazmat units responded to a gas leak at 400 Industrial drive off Lakeshore Pkwy around 11 a.m Sunday morning. Calls came in of a “gas odor in the air” at the construction site. Fire officials said crews on scene have determined the release to be ammonia used in refrigeration. Captain Bryan Harrell said there was an anhydrous ammonia leak from a 1 inch pipe outside a vacant building.
