mumps

Another Marquette University student has been diagnosed with the mumps, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the city of Milwaukee to six, the Milwaukee Health Department reported Tuesday.

It is at least the fourth confirmed case of mumps on the Marquette campus since winter break, and the first three cases were linked to each other, according to the university.

Mumps is a viral infection spread through coughing, sneezing, talking or occasionally through utensils and cups. It also can be spread by touching unwashed, contaminated surfaces.

Symptoms include one or more salivary glands (in the cheeks, below and in front of the ears) becoming inflamed, swollen and tender. Other symptoms include fever, fatigue, weakness, or pain with chewing or swallowing. Infected persons are considered contagious from two days before until five days after the onset of swelling in salivary glands, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
