Course Overview

What comes to mind when you think about biases? Your first reaction may be to think about the biases of others. In fact, many people will quickly say they don’t have any biases. However, as you learn the difference between the two types of biases you will find that all people harbor some biases. There are two main types of biases that will be discussed in this training: implicit and explicit, sometimes called unconscious bias and discrimination.

There is a difference between illegal discrimination, sometimes called explicit bias, and unconscious, or implicit bias. Discrimination is the conscious act of excluding someone based on a particular association with a group. In the United States, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) covers the laws regarding workplace discrimination based on several factors, including race, religion, gender, age (age 40 and over), disability, sexual orientation, or nation of origin. These laws cover all aspects of the employment process related to discrimination. Unconscious, or implicit bias, on the other hand, are unconscious thoughts people have regarding a specific person or group of people. Fortunately, there are several steps people can take to overcome biases.

In this course, you will learn to define both explicit and implicit biases and identify examples of both. In addition, you will learn more about the protections afforded under the EEOC laws regarding workplace discrimination. Finally, you will learn what you can do to overcome biases and help create a comfortable workplace for all people. This training is perfect for both employees and employers who are looking to make their work environments more welcoming and learn what to do in the face of illegal discrimination.
