Training Objectives

Check for responsiveness and breathing in an unconscious victim

Place a breathing, unresponsive victim into the recovery position

Course Overview

Finding an unconscious individual is one of the most stressful scenarios a first-aid provider can face.

This course guides you through the immediate steps of the primary survey: checking for a response, calling for help, and verifying breathing. You will learn how to safely manage a victim who is unconscious but breathing by using the "recovery position" to keep the airway clear and prevent choking. We also discuss the importance of continuous monitoring and what to do if the victim’s condition worsens before professional help arrives. By understanding how to protect an unresponsive person from further harm, you provide them with the best possible chance for a positive outcome while waiting for emergency services.

No Worries. Here's Some Helpful Info.

Ensure the scene is safe for you to enter, then check for responsiveness by tapping their shoulder and shouting, "Are you okay?" If there is no response, call 911 immediately.
The recovery position uses gravity to keep the tongue from falling back and blocking the throat. it also ensures that if the victim vomits, the fluid drains out of the mouth rather than into the lungs.
No. Smelling salts are not recommended in modern first aid. They can cause a sudden head jerk that could worsen a spinal injury, and they do not treat the underlying cause of the unconsciousness.
Look at the chest for rising and falling, listen for breath sounds, and feel for air against your cheek. Do this for no more than 10 seconds.
Do not move them unless their airway is blocked or they are in immediate danger (such as a fire). If you must turn them into the recovery position, try to move the head, neck, and torso as one single unit.
