Anyone who’s travelled on an interstate highway has seen their share of smashed vehicles. Given the speed of traffic and the number of heavy vehicles, it’s no wonder that accidents are common and oftentimes severe.
If you’re driving a commercial truck, you’re operating a potential weapon of mass destruction. This is especially so when carrying a heavy load. Passenger vehicles are no match for your comparatively gigantic rig and the weight that comes to bear if there’s a crash, not to mention the effects of gravity and momentum that make it impossible to stop quickly enough to avoid hitting someone or something. A single error of judgment can lead to a multiple car pile-up, a rollover, or any number of severe consequences.
Even if you’re the safest driver, others on the road are not. You must be prepared to react when another vehicle behaves unpredictably, especially given that many drivers don’t realize how commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) differ from passenger vehicles.
CMV safety is serious business. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), 5,005 people died in 4,455 crashes involving large trucks or buses in 2018. So, the more you can do to reduce your risk of causing an accident, the better it will be for others and yourself.
This course will help you improve your safe driving skills by following FMCSA’s best practices. You’ll explore how to safeguard your health, maintain alertness, and make certain safety practices habitual, as well as learning how to proactively reduce safety risks under normal and hazardous driving conditions. You’ll also review steps to avoid accidents and how to respond to them once they occur.
Armed with road-tested tips, you’ll be a better driver and help contribute to safer highways.
