Course Overview

Workplace fatigue is an issue in all areas, from office jobs to factories to roadways and healthcare settings! Fatigue caused by long hours, lack of sleep, and environmental factors can lead to decreased productivity, errors, and even accidents. Fatigue is more than just being tired, it's a combination of physical and psychological factors that lead to the inability to make good decisions, poor coordination, and lack of motivation. Luckily, there are strategies both employers and workers can take to combat workplace fatigue and its effects.

There are certain steps workers can take to combat workplace fatigue. Preventative measures include making sure to get enough sleep. It's recommended that adults get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Having good sleep habits, like creating a good sleep environment through proper temperature, lighting, and noise creates the optimal condition for restful sleep. It's also recommended to avoid caffeine near bedtime. Getting regular exercise and sticking to a healthy diet also promotes good sleep. If fatigue does hit at work, employees can take a walk, stretch, talk to a friend, or drink caffeine to combat its effects.

Employers also have a responsibility to recognize and mitigate workplace fatigue. By optimizing schedules to allow for regular sleep, permitting times of rest when possible, educating employees on the importance of sleep, and promoting a culture of sleep wellness, employers have the power to help prevent workplace fatigue. Taking the time to prevent fatigue saves time and money in the long run. An additional step companies can take is to institute a Fatigue Risk Management System which is a scientific approach to sleep that follows 5 levels to eliminate the issue.

This course will give you the information you need to prevent and counteract workplace fatigue. Being alert on the job is the best way to get the work done quickly and safely!
