No pressure or anything

Congrats, boss! You’ve officially entered the arena. Whether you got promoted, volunteered (brave), or got “voluntold” (we see you), welcome to the beautiful mess that is leadership. Spoiler alert: it’s not about barking orders. It’s about influence, inspiration, and not accidentally destroying morale with one poorly timed Slack message.

Looking back at your past bosses is actually the leadership hack you didn’t know you needed

Think about it. Who inspired you? Who made you want to quit on a Tuesday? Leadership styles are like coffee orders, some strong, some sweet, some way too bitter.

Authoritarian: My way or the highway. Gets stuff done, but don’t expect warm fuzzies.

Participative: Wants everyone in on the game plan. Great for buy-in, risky for decision paralysis.

Delegative: Trusts you to handle it. Sometimes empowering, sometimes terrifying.

Transactional: You hit your numbers, you get a gold star. Simple, but can feel a little robotic.

Transformational: Think visionary vibes. Motivates with purpose, not just policy.

Identify your default setting, then tweak it depending on the team, the task, or the tornado of chaos you’re facing that day. Leadership isn’t static, it evolves, and so should you.

Suddenly, communication is your full-time job and your secret weapon

Leading means speaking with impact. Every word sets a tone. Every email creates (or kills) trust. So yes, what you say and how you say it matters, big time.

Transparency: Don’t just drop decisions like plot twists. Give the why behind the what.

Empathy: You can be direct without being a robot. Understand where people are coming from.

Professionalism: Feedback doesn’t mean finger-pointing. Keep it real, but respectful.

Active Listening: Stop rehearsing your response and actually hear them. It builds more trust than any team-building retreat ever will.

If you don’t believe in your company’s mission, your team won’t either

You’re not just managing tasks, you’re the walking, talking billboard for your organization’s vision. Know it. Believe in it. Rally people behind it.

Also, get comfy with professional development. Not just for your team, but for yourself. Whether it’s training or just grabbing coffee with someone smarter than you, never stop growing.

Before you start handing out tasks like Halloween candy, get to know your team

You can’t lead what you don’t understand. So dig in, what motivates them? Where do they thrive? What stresses them out? What do they want out of this gig?

Loop them into goal-setting. Let them co-own the mission. And if something flops? Own that too. Being transparent about what’s working and what’s not earns you mad respect.

Don’t skip succession planning either. Who’s your next-in-line if life hits you with the flu or a promotion? Mentor now, so your legacy doesn’t vanish with your PTO.

Yes, you shape the culture now, so make it less cringe and more collaborative

Culture isn’t posters in the break room, it’s how people feel when they work with you. Show up. Run meetings that don’t waste everyone’s soul. Give credit, offer support, and call out toxic vibes before they take root.

Leadership isn’t always glamorous. But when it’s done right? It changes everything. For your team, your company, and you.

If you’re building a leadership legacy, don’t forget your foundation

Strong culture starts with intentional leadership. Lay the groundwork with the Workplace Leadership Safety: Transitional Steps Training Course.
