Excavations Safe Work Essentials

In this program, you will explore; What are excavations? Potential hazards? Protective measures? Safe work practices?

What are Excavations?
Excavating is the process of digging in to the earth surface and removing soil, in order to work below ground. A trench is a form of excavation that is deeper than it is wide but not wider than 15 feet. All excavations 5 feet or more in depth must have protective support measures to safeguard those working in that area. If you are planning an excavation that is deeper than 2 feet, a certified engineer must determine the appropriate protective measures. No matter the depth or width, no two excavations will be alike and each must be taken seriously.

Be aware the type of soil at you site. Soil is a mixture of sand, gravel, clay, water and air. The amount of these ingredients determines the soil cohesiveness or how well it holds together, the more cohesive the soil is the less it will crumble apart. Soil is an extremely heavy material. A cubic yard can weigh more than 2,700 lbs. about the same as a semi tractor. Moisture and rock mixed in the soil makes it even heavier. Once soil has been excavated it can never be return to the way it naturally form. All excavation sites must have a competent person on location which is often a supervisor or project manager. this person is trained in the responsibilities of identifying hazards before and during.
